Couples Counselling for First Responder Families.

One of you knows what it costs to do this work every day. The other knows what it costs to love someone who does. Both of those experiences deserve space.

Whatever it is that has brought you here, to this moment…trust it.

Couples Counselling for First Responder Families.

Working with first responder families is personal to Jess Preston, RCC. Both lived and professional experience in the first responder world shape Jess’ approach to this work, which means that your work culture is understood from the inside. The unwritten rules, the dark humour that keeps you functional, the exhaustion that doesn't show up on your face, and the particular weight that falls on the partner at home who loves someone in the thick of it. You won't need to translate your world here, and neither will they.

When one or both partners are police or RCMP, paramedics, firefighters, or frontline healthcare workers, relationships face pressures that standard couples approaches don't always account for. Shift work, occupational trauma, hypervigilance, and the deeply ingrained habit of emotional self-sufficiency can quietly erode connection at home, even in relationships that are otherwise strong.

Using an integrative blend of Gottman Method, attachment theory, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and more, sessions are tailored to the specific dynamics that first responder families navigate. Whether you connect virtually or in person, the work is grounded, practical, and shaped around your reality.

Typically, couples sessions are held weekly or biweekly to begin. 50 or 80-minute sessions available.

Areas of Focus Include:

    • Connection and reconnection after periods of distance

    • Communication across the emotional divide that shift work creates

    • Processing the impact of occupational trauma on your relationship

    • Navigating the mental load when one or both partners work irregular hours

    • Conflict resolution

    • Intimacy, in all its forms

    • Supporting the non-first-responder partner

    • Life and relationship transitions

    • Setting boundaries between work and home

    • Identifying patterns that keep you stuck and more!
